While it may sound like a crazy conspiracy theory, it is also the truth: there are seven keys that, for all intents and purposes, control the Internet. Yep!

It all comes down to how the internet was built

The weight of the world-wide-web (for the most part), rests on the shoulders of seven different people, with seven different keys. It all comes down to how the internet was built—specifically, the Internet’s domain name system.

When you want to access a website, you type in a domain name, like www.amazon.ca—but computers don’t think in the same way we do. This is why there are actually two address systems for the Internet.

The first address system is the Internet protocol address spaces. This is the IP address of each computer connected to the Internet; it makes up the literal foundation on which the internet is based.

Imagine how tough the job would be for marketing companies

A standard IPv4 address can look like this: 68.140.212.178, and an IPv6 address can be even longer, coming in at 128 hexidecimal characters in length. That makes a phone number seem easy to remember by comparison.

Imagine how tough the job would be for marketing companies if they had to sell us a product or service directing us to a company’s steady stream of numbers instead of an ad or jingle ending with a simple “companyXYZ.com”?
